Do you know , Mundan is also called “Chudakarna” or “chaulakarma”. There is a scientific reason behind Mundan sanskar. It was said that the birth hair can cause alergies and skin disorder to the scalp of babies.

Process:

Parents should feed atleast three bhrahmins. Post the bhoja(Food offerings), the mother takes baby to bath. New clothes are weared and then mother sits on ground facing east with the baby in her lap. A small Yagya is performed by bhrahmins(I will write about that in detail in another article).

Once this is done. Baby’s head is shaved three times using ustara (Rajor). The hairs are mixed with dung of an ox which are submerged in a river or a pond. Curd and milk is applied on baby’s head and pooja is perform to end the sanskar. Source (Sanskarmala)

Mundan ceremony is done for newborn babies where the hair from the baby’s scalp is being shaved off completely. This ceremony is mainly observed by Hindus all over India. The significance of this occasion as stated by the Vedas is in the belief that a newborn baby is born with hair that are linked to its past life and also bears trait from that past. Hence, it became necessary for this ritual to be done in order to get the baby free from its past and ensure a good healthy life ahead.
